The paintings in this series were created by applying innumerous layers of viscous paint using a wide, blade-like spatula.  Beginning with a single, heavy glob of color, the spatula is laid at the edge of the canvas and pulled across the surface.  The result is similar to a band of broken color, with a variation of rivets and protrusions, relative to the force of the stroke and the natural properties of the paint.

As this is repeated over the wet surface, the underlying color is stretched, revealed, and manipulated in a multitude of ways.  I like to think of each stroke as a chess move, in which my intuition is at odds with the possible disaster that may arise with each accumulating layer.

Sometimes, and only after an exhausting succession of color, the organic nature of the painting reveals itself.  For a moment, the chaos sheds itself to some coherence.  Glimpses of form merge with one another and manage to escape the jagged edges of color; still, without ever fully being realized.
